Introduction
World Leprosy Day is observed every year on the last Sunday of January. Its objective is to spread awareness about leprosy (Hansen’s disease), eliminate misconceptions related to it, and promote efforts for its eradication. In 2025, this day will be observed on January 26.
The theme for this year is “Unite. Act. Eliminate.” This theme emphasizes global collaboration, proactive efforts, and taking concrete steps towards eradicating leprosy.
Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. It primarily affects the skin, nervous system, respiratory tract, and eyes. Although this disease is completely curable, a lack of awareness and social stigma prevent many patients from receiving timely treatment.
This year’s theme focuses on three key aspects:
In India, January 30 is observed as “National Leprosy Eradication Day”, coinciding with the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who dedicated himself to serving leprosy patients.
According to the WHO’s 2023 report, there were 182,815 new cases of leprosy reported worldwide, with a significant portion from India. This highlights the need for continued efforts to eliminate the disease.
World Leprosy Day 2025 is a reminder that eliminating this disease is possible. With awareness, proper treatment, and social cooperation, we can completely eradicate leprosy. Let us embrace this year’s message—“Unite. Act. Eliminate.”—and contribute to this cause.
