पर्यावरण दिवस 2024 की थीम है –  Land Restoration, Desertification And Drought Resilience”। इस वर्ष का नारा है – our land, our future। Leave a Reply Cancel Reply Logged in as kedarq. Global Fight Against Tobacco Use

Global Fight Against Tobacco Use In view of World No-Tobacco Day 2024: Every year on May 31st, the world comes together to observe World No-Tobacco Day, an initiative spearheaded by the World Health Organization (WHO). The primary aim of this day is to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of tobacco use and to advocate for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption globally. Need to observe World No-Tobacco Day ! World No-Tobacco Day was established by the WHO in 1987 to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and the preventable death and disease it causes. The day is an opportunity to highlight the health risks associated with tobacco use and to encourage governments to implement strong tobacco control measures. The ultimate goal is to protect present and future generations not only from the devastating health consequences of tobacco use but also from the social, environmental, and economic scourges of tobacco production and consumption. The Toll of Tobacco Use: Tobacco use remains one of the leading causes of death and disease worldwide. According to the WHO, tobacco kills more than 8 million people each year. Over 7 million of these deaths are the result of direct tobacco use, while approximately 1.2 million are due to non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke. These statistics are a stark reminder of the urgent need for effective tobacco control measures. Global Impact: Tobacco use is a major risk factor for a host of diseases, including cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, and at least 20 different types or subtypes of cancer. Economic Burden: The economic costs of tobacco use are substantial, including significant healthcare costs for treating diseases caused by tobacco and lost productivity due to illness and premature death. Youth and Addiction: Each year, over a million young people start smoking. Most smokers begin before the age of 18, highlighting the critical need for preventive measures targeting youth. World No-Tobacco Day 2024 Theme The theme for this year is “Protecting Children from Tobacco Industry Interference”, focusing on shielding young people from the manipulative tactics of the tobacco industry. The Tobacco Industry’s Targeting of Children The tobacco industry has a long history of targeting young people to recruit the next generation of smokers. This is critical for their business, as many current smokers die prematurely or quit smoking, necessitating the recruitment of new users to maintain profitability. The industry’s tactics include: Youth-Oriented Marketing: Using advertising and promotional strategies designed to appeal to young people, such as colorful packaging, sponsorship of youth events, and use of social media influencers. Product Design: Developing products that are attractive to children and teenagers, such as flavored cigarettes and e-cigarettes (vapes) that mimic candy or fruit flavors. Accessibility: Ensuring that tobacco products are easily accessible to young people by lobbying against age restrictions and selling products near schools and playgrounds. Misleading Information: Spreading misinformation about the harms of tobacco use and the so-called benefits of smoking, often downplaying the risks associated with smoking and second-hand smoke. The Impact on Children The impact of tobacco industry interference on children and adolescents is profound and multifaceted: Health Risks: Early exposure to tobacco increases the risk of addiction, as nicotine is highly addictive. Young smokers are more likely to develop severe health problems later in life, including lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory issues. Addiction: The younger an individual starts using tobacco, the more likely they are to become heavily addicted, making quitting more difficult. Behavioral Influence: Marketing tactics that normalize smoking can influence children’s perceptions, making them more likely to start smoking themselves. Protecting Children from Tobacco Industry Interference Efforts to protect children from the tobacco industry’s influence are crucial. Key strategies include: Strong Legislation: Enacting and enforcing laws that ban tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship, especially those targeting young people. Implementing plain packaging laws and banning flavored tobacco products can also help. Age Restrictions: Strictly enforcing age restrictions on the sale of tobacco products and increasing the legal age for purchasing tobacco. Education Campaigns: Conducting public education campaigns to inform young people about the dangers of tobacco use and the tactics used by the tobacco industry to target them. School Programs: Implementing comprehensive tobacco prevention programs in schools that educate students about the risks of smoking and teach skills to resist peer pressure. Community Engagement: Involving communities in creating environments that support tobacco-free lifestyles for young people. Global Efforts and Advocacy Countries around the world have made significant strides in tobacco control, including implementing policies such as: Graphic Warning Labels: To inform consumers about the risks associated with tobacco use. Advertising Bans: To reduce the influence of tobacco advertising, especially on young people. Smoke-Free Laws: To protect non-smokers from second-hand smoke. Tax Increases: To discourage tobacco use through higher prices. Despite these efforts, continued vigilance and advocacy are essential. Organizations and individuals are encouraged to participate in World No Tobacco Day by organizing events, spreading awareness through social media, and advocating for stronger tobacco control policies. World No Tobacco Day 2024 serves as a crucial reminder of the ongoing battle against tobacco use and its widespread impacts. By focusing on sustainable alternatives to tobacco farming, this year’s theme underscores the interconnectedness of health, agriculture, and the environment. Together, we can work towards a healthier, tobacco-free future for all. KEDARQ being an Healthcare academy wish to play and important role to fight against Tobacco use.
